Where are these glands?
They include the parotid gland in front of the ear, and the glands under the jaw and tongue. A lump or swelling is not automatically cancer.
How a case is assessed
- Examination of the lump and facial movement.
- Ultrasound or CT.
- Needle biopsy when needed.
During surgery
The affected part or the gland is removed. In parotid surgery the facial nerve is traced and protected, and any effect on movement or mouth dryness is explained beforehand.

Frequently asked questions
Is a salivary swelling always a tumour?
No. It may be inflammation, a stone or a benign tumour. Examination and scans identify the cause.
Can facial movement be affected?
The facial nerve runs through the parotid gland and is protected during surgery. The chance of a temporary or lasting effect is explained beforehand.
When can I eat again?
Most patients start with fluids and soft food the same day or the next day.
