When is the adrenal gland removed?
When a tumour releases excess hormones, grows, or has an appearance that needs removal. Not every small nodule is a surgical case.
Preparation
- Hormone tests chosen for the case.
- CT or MRI to locate the tumour and measure it.
- Blood pressure and hormone control before surgery when needed.
How the operation is done
Removal is laparoscopic in many cases, and converted to open surgery if that is safer. Hormones are followed after the operation until they are stable.
The explainer video will be added soon.
Frequently asked questions
Will I need medication before surgery?
Yes for hormone-producing tumours, to control blood pressure and hormones before anaesthesia.
Can the operation be laparoscopic?
For most limited-size tumours, yes. Size and any concern about the nature of the tumour decide the approach.
Will I need cortisone afterwards?
Sometimes for a short period if the tumour was producing cortisol, until the other gland recovers.
